Apple iPhone 5 tops 2 million pre-orders in just 24 hours

Apple has broken all pre-order records with the iPhone 5. The company has managed to cash in 2 million iPhone 5 pre-orders in just 24 hours. In fact, Apple has actually managed to double the 1 million figure scored by the iPhone 4S. Apple says the majority of the pre-orders will be shipped on schedule on September 21, however due to some supply chain issues and the unprecedented demand for the device, some orders will be delivered by October.

Only the Samsung Galaxy S III manages to come even close to the iPhone in terms of demand, but it also pales in comparison to the iPhone 5. Recently, Samsung had announced that the Galaxy S III had sold 20 million units in just 90 days and it had managed to eclipse the iPhone 4S as the top selling smartphone in the US. Suffice to say things are about to change again once the iPhone 5 hits the shelves and the status quo will return to normality.

Earlier in the day US carrier AT&T had announced that pre-orders for the iPhone 5 had reached record levels but no numbers were released. Apple’s statement confirms what was widely suspected.
In addition to this, Apple has also announced the countries that will be part of the second wave who receive the iPhone 5 on September 28. The countries included in the list are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
